Brian Robinson

Consensus #214 · RB63Week 2: vs CAR, 32nd vs RBUpdated Sep 5

Brian Robinson Jr. is Atlanta's clear backup running back, valuable mainly as a short-yardage/goal-line changeup to Bijan Robinson and as the emergency starter if Bijan gets hurt.

Role

He's the unquestioned No. 2 back in Atlanta, stepping into the role Tyler Allgeier vacated in free agency — early-down relief work and short-yardage/goal-line carries, with minimal receiving involvement (career-low target rate) behind Bijan Robinson, who remains the clear lead back and every-down workhorse. Tyler Goodson, Nathan Carter and Carlos Washington Jr. are behind him on the depth chart, so his No. 2 job is secure barring a surprise.

The case for

He's a bigger, more physical runner than Allgeier who profiles as a true handcuff to a workhorse back, and any siphoning of goal-line work directly caps Bijan's touchdown upside while giving Robinson standalone scoring chances; if Bijan were to miss time, Robinson has already proven he can handle a lead-back workload (700+ yards in three straight seasons in Washington).

The case against

His touch count has been trending the wrong way — from 200-plus touches a year in Washington down to just 100 with San Francisco — he's never been a receiving threat (career-low targets), and unless Bijan Robinson is out, his passing-down and early-down snaps are capped, making him a low-floor, touchdown-dependent option most weeks.

Where analysts split

Analysts don't disagree that he's a complementary/handcuff piece, but they diverge on how much real goal-line work he actually takes from Bijan — some framing suggests his short-yardage usage could meaningfully mute Bijan's touchdown upside, while others treat him as more of an insurance stash who won't see enough volume to matter unless Bijan is hurt.
