James Conner

Consensus #220 · RB65Week 2: vs SEA, 6th vs RBIRUpdated Sep 1

Conner opens 2026 on injured reserve with a return designation, still fighting complications from the Week 3 2025 foot/ankle surgery, and even when healthy he projects as a depth back on a Cardinals roster that spent a top-five pick on Jeremiyah Love and paid Tyler Allgeier to take the work he used to own.

Role

Ineligible to play until at least Week 5 (IR-return, must miss the first four games). Arizona's first unofficial depth chart listed Allgeier first, Love second, Conner third, with Trey Benson (knee), Bam Knight and Corey Kiner behind. Allgeier is the between-the-tackles veteran, Love is the drafted centerpiece and the passing-down/explosive-play option; Conner's realistic path back is a rotational/short-yardage and third-down-protection role, or a bigger one only if Love's preseason high-ankle sprain lingers or Allgeier misses time. Even in his last healthy stretch (Weeks 1-2 of 2025) he was already splitting the backfield with Benson at roughly 14 touches a game.

The case for

He's a proven three-down back who was a top-16 PPR RB in 2024 on a 54% rush-attempt share, he caught passes and scored near the goal line, and he's a locker-room captain a new staff may trust in high-leverage situations. Love's high-ankle sprain this preseason is a real crack in the depth chart, and Benson's knee has kept him from establishing himself, so a Conner return in October to a backfield with a hobbled rookie is not far-fetched. IR-return with a designation also signals the team still wants him on the field at some point rather than simply cutting him.

The case against

He turns 31 with a surgically repaired foot/ankle that has now cost him nearly a full calendar year, he had no timetable to return to 11-on-11 work as recently as two weeks before cuts, and the team's offseason (Love at the top of the draft, Allgeier on a two-year deal) was an explicit statement that his lead-back days are over. Age-31 backs returning from major lower-leg surgery into a crowded room historically get depth snaps and special teams, not touches. He took a pay cut, which further signals where the team sees him.

Where analysts split

Not whether he'll lead the backfield — nobody argues that — but whether he ever gets meaningfully activated at all. One camp reads the IR-return designation plus Love's ankle as a real path to a rotational role by mid-October; the other reads the lack of any 11-on-11 timetable and the Allgeier/Love investment as a sign he's a fullback/special-teams body or an eventual release. The concrete question is what Conner's practice participation looks like when his 21-day activation window opens.
