James, a 2025 fifth-round pick out of Oregon, is fighting for the RB2/RB3 spot in San Francisco's backfield behind lead back Christian McCaffrey. Camp and preseason reports had him getting reps with the starters when McCaffrey rested, and he flashed in the preseason finale (8 carries for 35 yards, 1 catch for 20 yards) despite a minor rib issue that is no longer a designation. Expect a light, rotational role behind McCaffrey in the regular season -- spot carries and occasional check-down/screen work -- with his touch share dependent on how the coaching staff splits reps among the other backs on the depth chart.
Coaches reportedly trusted him with starter-level reps in camp when McCaffrey sat, he showed explosiveness on a long catch-and-run in the preseason, and if McCaffrey (who has an extensive injury history) misses time, James is positioned to see a real bump in workload.
San Francisco's backfield is crowded with other veteran and young backs also pushing for touches, his preseason target volume was minimal (one target), and as long as McCaffrey is healthy there's little standalone rushing or passing-game role left for James on a weekly basis.

The open question is which back actually wins the RB2 job battle and how much of a real role that translates into once the games matter -- coverage found was limited to camp/preseason chatter rather than settled regular-season usage, so it's unclear if James has pulled ahead of his competition for change-of-pace or emergency-starter duty.
