Walker landed in Kansas City on a big free-agent deal as the clear lead back on a team that vacated more RB carries than anyone, so the opportunity is finally there — the open question is whether the offense and the blocking support it, and the coverage I could find is camp/early-season rather than deep in-season game logs.

Listed first on the depth chart and described by Chiefs beat writers as the intended workhorse, ahead of Emari Demercado, Brashard Smith and rookie Emmett Johnson (Johnson has been a clear fourth in practice pecking order). The Chiefs entered the year with roughly 288 vacated RB carries after Isiah Pacheco's departure, and KC has been deliberately working Walker into the screen game in camp — a passing-game role he never really got in Seattle, where he ran routes on only about 32% of snaps and played just 46.8% of offensive snaps in 2025 while splitting with Zach Charbonnet. Smith is the most likely nuisance for third-down/hurry-up snaps; Demercado is the veteran change-of-pace.
The talent has never been the issue: a 97th-percentile run grade in 2025 (second among qualified backs), 89th-percentile elusiveness, 88th-percentile broken-tackle rate, a 1,000-yard season on only 221 carries at 4.6 YPC, and a Super Bowl LX MVP on the back of a dominant postseason. Seattle capped him with a true split — Charbonnet took 51 red-zone carries to his 30 — and Kansas City has no such committee mate, no established goal-line back, and is actively adding screens to his workload. If Mahomes is back to form, Walker inherits volume plus the best scoring environment of his career.
He's been a two-down, injury-prone back who has missed games in most seasons, and the environment is worse than the contract implies: KC's run-block win rate fell from 7th to 25th last year and the team spent nothing meaningful fixing the line. Kansas City's offense is pass-first by design and has historically fed backfield committees rather than one 300-touch back, and Walker's career-long inefficiency (4.3 career YPC) behind bad blocking plus a Mahomes coming off a torn ACL/MCL is a real risk to both volume and per-touch value.
