Jake Oettinger
Oettinger is Dallas's clear No. 1 goalie and has been playing like an elite one, with DeSmith taking the occasional rest start. The wire's day-to-day tag is not explained by anything I found dated after it.
Role
He starts the large majority of games, with Casey DeSmith as the backup. A Yahoo/Dallas report from about five days ago had DeSmith starting at New Jersey on a Tuesday. That was only his third start of the season, and Dallas was not on consecutive nights. Rotowire's start notes (Oct 2 to Oct 29) show Oettinger starting the opener, and also the games on Oct 5, 13, 17, 20 and 22, plus the Oct 29 home game against Montreal, which ESPN says Dallas lost 5-2. The Dallas Sports Journal says he stopped 24 of 25 in a 3-1 win over Columbus on Saturday, Oct 31. I did not read Daily Faceoff's Stars line page. Its indexed copy was months old, so I am not reporting a depth chart from it. Ice time is not applicable for a goalie, and power-play or line placement does not apply.
ESPN's note (published after the Montreal game) has him at 6-3-1 with a 1.69 GAA, a .917 save percentage and a league-leading three shutouts in 10 outings. It says he has the upside to win his first Vezina. He was the NHL's second star of the week ending Oct 11 after allowing one goal in three starts. Gulutzan credited him after Saturday's win, saying he was the difference while Dallas was outplayed for 40 minutes. He also has the backing of a long-term contract, an All-Star pedigree and a 2026 Olympic gold medal with Team USA.
The early numbers look better than the team in front of him. Daily Faceoff's power rankings this week had Dallas dropping games to New Jersey and Montreal, and its writers called out crippling forward depth issues. The Dallas Sports Journal noted he had allowed seven goals in his two starts before Saturday. The Montreal loss included three first-period goals. His career save percentage is .910, so a .917 mark is not far above his norm. ESPN's own profile of him called last season uncharacteristic statistically. Last season's line from our data is only 11 GP, 1 GS, 7 W, 3 L, 1 OTL, a .921 save percentage by the numbers given (211 saves on 229 shots) and 18 goals against. That is a very small sample.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on the role: he is the starter and nobody I found questions that. The only open question is whether his results hold up behind a team with thin forward depth, and I found no one arguing that in detail. I found nothing on how often DeSmith will play beyond the one rest start.
