Alex Lyon

Consensus #113 · G15 · tier 7Week 5: 3 gamesIRUpdated Oct 26

Lyon is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that set back in mid-October, so he has no usable role until he is cleared and wins back starts from Luukkonen.

Role

He has no role now. The NHL.com game story (published around 26 October) says he has been unavailable since the preseason upper-body injury, and Luukkonen has carried more of the load. The same story has Colten Ellis at 1-1-0 with a .864 save percentage. ESPN's Sabres page (about 5 days old) lists Luukkonen as starter and Ellis as backup, with Lyon absent. I could not read Daily Faceoff's goalie listing: the fetch returned only an empty shell dated March 2026. Last season Lyon rotated with Luukkonen: 36 GP and 15 GS, so he was the lesser share of the work. Buffalo Hockey Beat (about 2 days old) says Luukkonen never started more than three straight games last season. When healthy, Lyon would compete with Luukkonen and Ellis for starts. I found no reporting that sets a split.

The case for

Last season he went 20-10-4 with 885 saves on 976 shots against, and he played well when Luukkonen was hurt. Buffalo's team save percentage is 31st (.863) per NHL.com. Ruff said before the setback that Lyon would have made his season debut on a night in Montreal, and said he is progressing. If Luukkonen's form slips or his injury history returns, a healthy Lyon is the proven option in a timeshare.

The case against

The setback came in practice during his return, the team has given no timeline, and Ruff said only that they will see how rehab goes. He is 33. He also has a lower-body injury history from last season. Luukkonen is getting the regular starts and, per Buffalo Hockey Beat, has recently improved his play. Ellis is also in the mix, so even a healthy Lyon may not get a clear share.

Where analysts split

The open question is how many starts Lyon gets once healthy, and nobody has a return date. The sources I found do not split on that. They simply do not address it. A Sabrenoise piece from about 29 days ago raised a Hellebuyck trade as a possibility if the injuries lasted. A Buffalo Hockey Beat item from 2 days ago says Hellebuyck is now in New Jersey, so that possibility looks closed.

Upper body setback, no timeline

Report explicitly says he had a setback and is now without a timeline, despite the platform's listed return date of 10/24. Low-end fantasy value even upon return given three-goalie logjam in Buffalo.

What would change this: News of Lyon resuming practice or the team announcing an actual timeline/return date.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
