Anton Forsberg
Forsberg is one half of a Kings goalie tandem that has no settled order, and ESPN's Oct. 18 note says the Kings' starting job is up for grabs while the team is 0-4-2.
Role
Forsberg started Oct. 3 at San Jose and Oct. 17 against Boston, and relieved Darcy Kuemper on Oct. 13 against Edmonton (ESPN player page, fetched Oct. 19). Daily Faceoff's Kings line page, fetched Oct. 19, was last updated Oct. 18 and is sourced from the Oct. 17 game. Its goalie section lists Forsberg first and Kuemper after him, but the fetch cut off before the end of that section. I could not confirm whether the order means anything. The Kings play at Washington on Oct. 20, and ESPN expects a five-games-in-eight-days road trip that ends with a back-to-back. ESPN's spin says Forsberg should get at least one start on that trip and likely two if Kuemper keeps struggling. I did not find a confirmed starter for any game on the trip. Skater lines are not relevant to him.
He closed last season strongly, going 5-1 in six starts from April 1 to April 16 and starting the playoff series against Colorado (The Hockey News season review). Daily Faceoff reported a .947 save percentage in his last seven regular-season games and called him excellent down the stretch. ESPN's Oct. 18 note says the Kings could lean on him more if Kuemper keeps struggling, and the team has not won yet, so the crease is open.
He has not won a game this season. ESPN shows 0-1-1 with a .883 save percentage over three appearances, two of them starts, and the team is 0-4-2. His only start before Oct. 17 was a 5-4 overtime loss at San Jose in which he allowed five goals on 25 shots. The Hockey News says Kuemper was the primary starter for most of last season, and I found nothing saying Forsberg has taken the job outright.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Forsberg is the Kings' starter or a backup. ESPN says the starting job is up for grabs and expects him to get one or two starts on the coming road trip if Kuemper struggles. The Hockey News says last season's finish sparked debate over Forsberg versus Kuemper as the starter, and that the Kings could run a tandem. I found no Kings beat writer or coach comment on how the games will be split.
