Arsenii Sergeev
Sergeev is a rookie emergency backup in Calgary: he was called up from the AHL after Devin Cooley's injury, started the second half of a back-to-back, and his role lasts only as long as Cooley is out.
Role
FlamesNation (Oct 31) reports the Flames recalled him from AHL Calgary on Friday, Oct 31, after Cooley was injured on Wednesday and put on injured reserve as week-to-week. He dressed as Dustin Wolf's backup in a 6-2 win over Seattle on Friday. Derek Wills of QR Calgary reported he would start Saturday's second game of the back-to-back at Colorado, and FlamesNation's recap says he made 28 saves in a 5-2 loss. Wolf is the clear No. 1, and Sergeev's work looks limited to back-to-back second games. The Daily Faceoff page (fetched Nov 2, last updated Nov 1) loaded, but the text cut off before its goalie section, so I can't say what it shows for goalies. No Flames report says how many starts he will get, how long Cooley will be out, or who gets the next back-to-back. He began the season with AHL Calgary and went 4-2-0 in his first six appearances there, per FlamesNation.
Coach Ryan Huska said after the Colorado game that Sergeev "looked a little bit nervous early on" but settled in and made nice saves. Before the call-up Huska had praised his debut, saying he made saves he probably shouldn't have. FlamesNation noted he became the AHL club's de facto starter last season and that some thought Wolf might play both ends of the back-to-back because of Sergeev's inexperience. The Flames chose to start him anyway.
He has two NHL games, he is a rookie, and he is only here because of an injury. Wolf is the starter. If Cooley comes back from week-to-week injured reserve, Sergeev's most likely move is back to the AHL, and nothing says he would keep any NHL work. The Colorado game was a loss, with Calgary down 4-0 early in the second period, and his starts come on back-to-backs against strong opponents.
Where analysts split
broad agreement: the sources I read treat him as a short-term fill-in and don't dispute that Wolf is the No. 1. What no one has reported is how long Cooley is out, which decides how many starts Sergeev gets.
