Carter Hart
Carter Hart is the Golden Knights' lead goalie on current evidence, but he is in a real split with Adin Hill and is coming off an undisclosed injury that has not been explained.
Role
Hart started the season as the primary starter. Hill took over after Hart left the Oct. 27 morning skate with an undisclosed injury (ESPN, Oct. 27). Hill started that night against Ottawa, and Hart was not an option. ESPN's fantasy note, about two days before this check, said Hart would back up Hill against New Jersey, and Hill played at least part of that game. The Nov. 2 game previews at Inside the Rink and Sportskeeda project Hart to start at Boston, with Hill listed second. Those are projections, not confirmations, and I did not read a Daily Faceoff page, since the search only returned stale copies. ESPN's note also expects Hart to start one half of the Boston and Pittsburgh back-to-back, and the club has not confirmed which half. Before the injury, Hart and Hill had shared much of the net time (ESPN, Oct. 27). Ryan Craig is the coach, and no source I found gives a formal split. Carl Lindbom and Akira Schmid are also in the organization. I found no report on who is the current third goalie.
Hart was the club's best goalie last year and carried Vegas to the Stanley Cup Final, going 12-4 in the first three playoff rounds with a .924 save percentage (ESPN). Vegas Hockey Knight called him the de facto No. 1 entering this season. Rotowire's notes through Oct. 20 had him as the top goalie, and he was back in the projected Nov. 2 lineup at Boston.
His early results are mediocre. After the Oct. 27 injury, ESPN had him at 4-3-1 with a 2.76 GAA and an .889 save percentage, with Hill taking a lot of the starts. Rotowire noted Hill could get more looks if Hart hits a rough patch. Both goalies have a history of injuries. Hart also struggled badly in the Cup Final, and the injury behind his Oct. 27 exit is still undisclosed.
Where analysts split
The open question is how the starts are split now that Hill has played well and Hart is coming back from the undisclosed injury. Does Hart return to a clear majority, or do the two share starts roughly evenly? Rotowire still treats Hart as the top goalie, while ESPN's Oct. 27 coverage describes shared net time. Nobody has reported the split in detail.
