Drew Commesso
Commesso is Chicago's emergency third goalie for now: he was loaned to Rockford on September 27, and the only current NHL path I found is an injury or a slump ahead of him.
Role
He is Rockford's expected starter, with Stanislav Berezhnoy behind him and rookie Adam Gajan also in the room (The Rink's season preview, about 30 days old). The NHL pair is Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom: Knight started in the Blackhawks' lineup tweets of Oct 16 and Oct 20, and Daily Faceoff's team news page showed Soderblom starting a game in Utah (undated in the snippet). I did not fetch Daily Faceoff's live line page, so I have no current NHL depth chart reading. Nothing found says he is on the NHL roster today. He has no power play or skater role, because he is a goalie, and he has no NHL workload unless he is recalled.
The org likes him. GM Kyle Davidson said on July 1 that the club has a ton of faith in him, now and down the road. His two-year deal becomes one-way for 2027-28, which reads as a plan for a full-time NHL job. The Sun-Times noted that Soderblom's contract expires in 2027 and that Soderblom had a poor .880 save percentage last season. The Rink's preview says the question for Commesso looks like when, not if, he gets a full-time NHL job. He also had a 2-1-0 line with a shutout in three NHL games last season.
His 2025-26 AHL numbers were mediocre: a .901 save percentage and a 13-20 record over 37 games, per Daily Faceoff. Yahoo and the Sun-Times both framed him as third on the depth chart behind Knight and Soderblom to start the year, and the Sun-Times said he would have to convincingly outplay Soderblom in camp. He was sent to Rockford at the end of camp. His last-season NHL sample is only three games, with 7 goals allowed on 84 shots against, so it says little. Even if he is recalled, that would most likely be a short injury fill-in, not a share of the starts.
Where analysts split
The open question is timing, not whether he gets there: whether he displaces Soderblom as the backup before Soderblom's deal expires in 2027, or only after. The Sun-Times suggests the take-over comes when Soderblom's contract ends, and The Rink says only that it is a matter of when. I found no current beat-writer piece arguing for an earlier promotion.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
