Dylan Garand
Garand is the Rangers' de facto No. 1 goalie for now, with Igor Shesterkin hurt and Joonas Korpisalo on injured reserve. The latest coverage I found is dated October 22, and it says the job is his for the foreseeable future.
Role
As of an SI Rangers piece dated Oct 22, Garand had started all five games since Shesterkin's Oct. 9 injury. Spencer Martin is the backup, and his only NHL appearance with the team was relief work in a 7-1 loss to New Jersey. The same piece says Korpisalo had not yet started skating and was expected back within the next few weeks. It also says the Rangers' next back-to-back is Nov. 27 and 28, which leaves built-in rest for now. Coach Mike Sullivan said he is watching the schedule and how to use the goalies, and that Garand is in a good place right now. I did not fetch a Daily Faceoff page, so I have no confirmed current depth chart. I found nothing newer than Oct 22 on starts since then.
He took over as starter after clearing waivers before the season and has stayed in net. SI cites a .929 save percentage and 1.85 goals-against average as of Oct 22. A tweet embedded in that article, from the Rangers' MSG broadcast account, has him 6-1-2 as an NHL starter. The schedule is light on back-to-backs through late November. Shesterkin's injury is described as possibly season-ending, and the Rangers appear to trust him as the starter.
The sample is tiny. Last season he went 4-6-1 in 11 games with 26 goals against on 252 shots, with one start. He was on waivers in the preseason because decision makers reportedly did not think he was ready for even a No. 2 role, according to SI. His AHL save percentage last season was .896, per SI. A healthy Korpisalo returning could cut into his starts. Sullivan's comment on managing the schedule leaves room for a split.
Where analysts split
Not a true split among analysts. The open question is how the workload divides once Korpisalo returns from injured reserve, and whether Garand's early results hold up given his thin NHL track record. I found no source arguing he loses the job outright. The coverage is mostly SI team-site pieces, and I could not read The Athletic piece it cites (subscription required).
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
