Nico Daws

Consensus #163 · G22 · tier 7Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Nico Daws is a backup-level goalie in a three-man Winnipeg crease, and as of the 1 November lineups he is not the listed No. 2 behind Stuart Skinner.

Role

Skinner is the starter. ESPN's Jets line page (indexed 14 days ago, so possibly stale) lists Clay Stevenson as backup and Daws as an extra. Inside the Rink's 1 November projection for the game at Carolina shows only Skinner and Stevenson in goal. The Daily Faceoff line page loaded on 2 November, but the fetch cut off before the goalie section, so I did not read its goalie order. Daws was traded from New Jersey to Winnipeg on October 23 in the Connor Hellebuyck deal. ESPN's recap says he stopped 33 of 37 in a 5-2 loss to Florida on October 30, the second half of a back-to-back. A Jets beat-writer line tweet captured by gamedaytweets.com also reads "Daws starts", but it is undated. The Jets have lost eight straight, per the ESPN recap. No source I found gives a Skinner/Daws/Stevenson split in percentages or starts.

The case for

RotoWire (October 23) said Daws would at least have a chance to supplant Stevenson as the No. 2 option. Dobber Prospects calls him a solid backup or streaming goalie with upside, and it noted improved consistency and confidence. ESPN's recap said his Florida outing was fine given the back-to-back circumstances. He also started on that back-to-back night, which suggests the club will use him in that spot.

The case against

His season line across New Jersey and Winnipeg is 6 GP, 2-3-0, 2.86 GAA and .886 SV%, per ESPN and Yahoo. Last season he made no starts. Dobber Prospects calls him no more than a high-upside backup. The latest projected lineups have Stevenson, not Daws, dressing behind Skinner. Stevenson holds the No. 2 job unless something changes, and Skinner is the clear No. 1 even after a run of heavy losses.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether Daws overtakes Stevenson for the backup spot and the back-to-back starts. RotoWire and Dobber frame it as a competition for spot starts, while ESPN's depth chart and the 1 November projected lines show Stevenson dressing as backup. Nobody I found disputes that Skinner is the starter.
