Nikke Kokko

Consensus #300 · G45 · tier 7Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Sep 26

Kokko is Seattle's goaltending prospect ticketed for another season in the AHL, someone to know as an injury-recall option rather than an NHL fantasy piece for 2026-27.

Role

Per Fox Sports (checked profile, current preseason note) Kokko is "locked in as the Firebirds' top option between the pipes" and figures to open the season starting for AHL Coachella Valley. The Kraken's NHL tandem is set with Joey Daccord as the clear number one and Philipp Grubauer as backup, both under sizable contracts; a Yahoo Sports report on training-camp cuts (4 days old) has Victor Ostman, not Kokko, as the third goalie behind that pair after Seattle's camp trims. In an exhibition game recapped by Sound of Hockey on Sept. 20, 2026, Daccord and Grubauer each worked two periods before Kokko closed out the third, which is standard preseason goalie rotation and not a sign of an NHL role. He has NHL appearances in each of the past two seasons only as an emergency or late-season call-up (four career games total), including finishing Seattle's last three games of 2025-26 after a recall.

The case for

He is Seattle's top goaltending prospect and has already logged real NHL minutes in relief situations two seasons running, so a strong AHL season or an injury to Daccord or Grubauer could get him another recall, and beat writers still consider him the heir apparent if the Kraken ever move on from one of the veterans.

The case against

With Daccord entrenched as the number one and Grubauer signed as a well-paid backup, and Victor Ostman currently pegged as the in-house third option per the September Yahoo Sports camp-cuts report, Kokko projects to spend all of 2026-27 in the AHL barring multiple injuries, with no clear path to regular NHL minutes.

Where analysts split

The reporting does not show analysts disagreeing about Kokko's near-term role; the only open question is organizational, whether Kokko or Ostman would be first in line for a recall if Daccord or Grubauer gets hurt, and that pecking order has not been stated explicitly in any source found.
