Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen
Luukkonen is Buffalo's current starter and has been shaky: coverage through 1 November shows a slow start, some recent improvement, and trade chatter that is not tied to any move yet.
Role
He started Buffalo's opener and has been the goalie in the Sabres' recent game previews. The Hockey News's game-day preview for the Kings game (checked 2 November) listed him with Colten Ellis. I could not confirm where Alex Lyon fits. Lyon had an upper-body injury in preseason, and Luukkonen's own preseason lower-body issue was called precautionary. Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched 2 November, last updated 31 October) loaded, but the text cut off before the goalie section, so I have not read the depth chart. The split with Lyon or Ellis is unconfirmed. Luukkonen was 3-3-3 with a 3.56 GAA and .866 save percentage before the Kings game. He then stopped 27 of 29 in the 3-2 win on Saturday, his 200th NHL game (CBS Sports, 1 November). Last season he had 1 GS in 10 GP in our data, but Daily Faceoff reports he and Lyon split the 2025-26 regular season almost evenly, so that line may not reflect his usual workload.
He has settled in after the rough start. Harrington noted he was 2-0-2 with a 3.24 GAA and .897 save percentage over four games, and Sabre Noise had him at .898 over seven. He stopped 27 of 29 against the Kings, and Buffalo has won three straight. GM Jarmo Kekalainen said publicly on 20 October that Luukkonen will be "a big part of our future." Daily Faceoff's April 2026 playoff-preview piece described a 2025-26 regular season in which he and Lyon split time. In that coverage Luukkonen had slightly better numbers than Lyon over his 35 games.
Early-season results were poor: a .860 save percentage and 3.59 GAA through seven games, and a .167 quality-starts percentage cited by Yahoo. CBS noted he won only two of his previous five outings before Saturday. Daily Faceoff called him more of a solid 1A than a franchise goalie. He also has an injury history (Buffalo Hockey Beat) and left the last preseason game with a lower-body issue. The Hellebuyck trade talk (reported by Daily Faceoff and NHL Trade Rumors) says any deal would almost certainly involve him leaving Buffalo. The rumors also link the Rangers and Devils to him. No trade has been reported.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether he is the long-term number one or a 1A in a split, with his recent form and possible trade involvement as the open questions. Daily Faceoff's view is that Buffalo's GM backs him, but a Hellebuyck deal would likely move him. I did not find a source making a direct case for a Luukkonen/Lyon workload split this season. The day-to-day wire note was not explained in anything I found, and I could not confirm any new injury.
