Aaron Wiggins
Aaron Wiggins, acquired from Oklahoma City in June, is a bench wing with a hot start in Atlanta: through three games he is averaging 17.0 points on 58.1 percent shooting, and the open question is how long that lasts in a crowded rotation.
Role
He comes off the bench at both forward spots. CBS/RotoWire (about Oct 11) said he moves back to the bench when Jalen Johnson starts. He started one preseason game, at power forward, when Johnson rested. Minutes: 22 in the opener (Fox Sports, ESPN) and 22 in the preseason finale (NBC Sports). I did not find a published regular-season minutes split. Fox Sports says he has been the most productive member of the second unit. The guards above him are Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels and CJ McCollum, with Kingston Flemings as the fourth guard (Sports Illustrated via Yahoo). The sources describe Wiggins as a fifth guard who also fills in at small forward. Fox Sports says Lu Dort is currently out and the Hawks still value Wiggins when Dort returns. The wire note says he rests Monday against the Thunder, and I found nothing more on that. The wire's 'preseason' label does not match the regular-season coverage dated Oct 24, so treat the note's timing with caution.
He scored at least 15 in every game (NBC, Oct 24) and is averaging 3.3 threes, 3.0 boards and 1.7 steals while shooting 52.6 percent from three. Fox Sports says his shooting and defensive activity secure a consistent role. Sports Illustrated and Yahoo call him a swing piece for the Hawks' ceiling, and Atlanta traded Buddy Hield to clear the spot for him. They argue he is a more complete player than the shooters who held that end-of-bench role before. His fit with Quin Snyder's system, with Johnson and Daniels passing to him on cuts and open looks, supports that case.
NBC Sports says that as a backup he may not keep up this pace. RotoWire/NBC called his preseason scoring unlikely to carry over given the crowded backcourt. Fox Sports says the bench role limits his upside. Last year in Oklahoma City, per CBS/RotoWire, his playoff role shrank and he logged under 10 minutes in eight of 11 playoff games. NBC notes he fell out of that rotation.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether a bench role in a deep backcourt can sustain 15-plus points a night, or whether his output drops once Dort is healthy and the rotation settles. NBC sees streaming value mainly if he gets spot starts. Fox Sports reads the Hawks' stated valuation as protecting his role even with Dort back.
