Toumani Camara
Camara is a starting wing for Portland this season. His main jobs are guarding the other team's best perimeter player and spacing the floor next to Lillard, Morant and Avdija.
Role
Coach Micah Nori named Lillard, Morant, Camara, Avdija and Clingan as the starting five, per a Blazers Edge post (3 days old) summarizing The Athletic. It says Nori plans a 10-man rotation, with Holiday, Scoot Henderson and Williams off the bench. The ninth man is expected to be Sidy Cissoko, and the tenth rotates among Krejci, Potter and Carlson. A Sports Mole preview (today) lists him as a starter at forward, with Sharpe out for Portland with a torn meniscus. It also expects him to draw the first assignment on Luka Doncic. I found no minutes or usage figures for this season and no word on back-to-back rest. Last season's line in our data covers only 2 games and 100 minutes, so it is no guide to his load. The Yahoo Sports piece says he started all 82 games last season. That conflicts with our data and I could not reconcile the two.
He is a floor spacer who needs few called plays. Morant, Avdija and Lillard create the shots and kick the ball out to him. ESPN's fantasy note says he is getting a lot of wide-open looks. Through the first two games he was shooting 61.9 percent overall and 52.9 percent from three. SI notes he started 9 of 17 from deep. He also keeps an All-Defensive-caliber defensive role, and Yahoo calls him the essential floor-spacing glue.
The hot start won't hold. SI says outright it doesn't expect this shooting to last, and ESPN calls the percentages unsustainable. SI notes he has never shot better than 37.5 percent from three in a season. Blazers Edge described an earlier up-and-down stretch in which he was asked to do too much on defense and got fatigued, and that was written when Holiday and Henderson were out, so it may not describe this roster. With so much creation around him, his usage on offense will probably stay low.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether his improved three-point shooting is real. Analysts agree on his role and starting spot. The open question is whether he keeps hitting threes at a high rate as a spot-up option, or falls back toward his career marks. No source I found disputes his starting job.
