Michael Porter Jr.

Consensus #28 · SF11 · tier 3Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Michael Porter Jr. is Brooklyn's lead perimeter scorer, with a steady scoring and rebounding line. How many touches he keeps next to Julius Randle is the open question.

Role

The NBA.com game log, read 2 November, shows 33 minutes at Cleveland on Oct 24, 21 against Indiana on Oct 25, 40 at Boston on Oct 27 (overtime) and 26 against Detroit on Oct 30. Rotowire has 34 minutes against Charlotte on Oct 21. Fox Sports says he started at small forward in a game in which he played fewer than 17 minutes. That note is undated and may be preseason. A Rotowire item from July, citing SI.com, says Randle is expected to be a focal point of the half-court offense. I found no published usage rate or minutes tracker for this season. I also found no beat-writer report on who competes for his minutes. The Nets are losing, and Rotowire's Oct 28 note has him still active defensively.

The case for

He scores efficiently on volume. He had 27 points with six threes at Boston, 28 points with four steals at Cleveland and 26 points against Charlotte. NBC Sports (Oct 30) expects him to get his buckets even if Brooklyn struggles again. Fox Sports calls him one of the Nets' primary perimeter scoring threats. The rebounding and steals add to the scoring.

The case against

The minutes swing from 21 to 40 across the last four games. Adding Randle could cut his touches, per the July Rotowire item. NBC calls the typical Porter game points and rebounds with not much else, so assists stay low. Wrist soreness cost him a game earlier this season, and Brooklyn lost its first five games before beating Indiana. Blowout losses can also trim his minutes, as in the 26-minute, minus-25 Detroit game.

Where analysts split

The coverage I found does not frame a split among analysts. The one concrete open question is whether Randle's arrival lowers Porter's shot volume. The July report predicted it. His October box scores show heavy shooting, but I did not find usage figures to settle it.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
