Kawhi Leonard

Consensus #21 · SF4 · tier 3Week 3: 3 gamesOutUpdated Oct 26

Kawhi Leonard is a 35-year-old Raptors starter whose availability is uncertain for now. He was a late scratch on Oct. 25 with left knee swelling and has further testing on Monday.

Role

Before the scratch, he played 24 minutes in the opener at Chicago and 28 in the win at Washington (AP). He scored 23 points on 5-for-17 shooting, then 16 points on 7-for-20. Against Minnesota, Ja'Kobe Walter started in his place alongside Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes and Jakob Poeltl (NBC Sports). Walter shot over 50 percent and led Toronto in scoring, and NBC calls him a streamer when he starts. Coach Darko Rajaković said Leonard would get more testing on the knee Monday, and Toronto will update after that (ClutchPoints, citing Vivek Jacob). His status for Wednesday against Orlando is "up in the air." I found no minutes cap, back-to-back plan or return date.

The case for

The swelling is in the left knee, not the right knee that needed reconstructive surgery (Yahoo). He missed only three games last January over irritation in the same left knee, then returned. He is a seven-time All-Star who led Toronto to 2-0 before the scratch. His slow shooting start (32.4% through two games) looks like early-season rhythm. He basically asked for patience after the opener (ClutchPoints). If Monday's testing is clean, this could be a short absence.

The case against

His knee history is long: an ACL tear in 2021 and a meniscus tear in 2023, both in the right knee. He has averaged about 53 games per regular season since 2011 (AP). The Clippers load-managed him for much of his tenure there. The scratch came an hour before tip with no earlier injury-report listing, and Toronto gave no details beyond swelling. ClutchPoints speculates that minutes limits or game-by-game management would not be a surprise if the knee keeps acting up. He is 35, and his minutes have been modest, at 24 and 28.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether this is a brief swelling flare-up or the start of recurring management. Coverage splits on that. Yahoo stresses that it is the other knee and that he came back quickly from a similar issue last January. ClutchPoints and AP point to his history and the chance of game-by-game rest. Monday's testing has not been reported yet, so this is unresolved.

Injury: Out: assessed avoid

Knee injury, out 3-4 weeks minimum

Report specifies a multi-week absence of at least three to four weeks, and notes this is a minimum rather than firm return date, so he should be avoided for several weeks of lineups.

What would change this: Any update narrowing or extending the three-to-four week timeline, or news of a setback/complication.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
