Ace Bailey
Bailey is a second-year forward who moved into Utah's starting five two days ago, but he is in a crowded frontcourt and wing group, and his role could still change.
Role
After losing a camp battle to Jaxson Hayes, Bailey came off the bench in the season-opening loss to Memphis and played 24 minutes (RotoWire, ClutchPoints, about 24 October). He then started against the Pelicans, replacing Hayes in the first unit, and played 21 minutes (RotoWire, NBC Sports). Hayes closed that game ahead of him (NBC Sports). A Heavy.com depth chart piece from about four days ago, written before the Pelicans game, listed Keyonte George, Darryn Peterson, Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Hayes as the usual starters. It had Bailey as a backup at the 3 or 4 behind Markkanen or Jackson. I found no reporting on his usage rate or on whether the Pelicans lineup will stay in place. I did not fetch any live depth chart or lineup page.
The case for Bailey is versatility and a good preseason. He averaged 9.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals in preseason (Yahoo Sports). He has already put up a 12-5-3 line with three blocks off the bench and a start in the same week. One Yahoo Sports column calls him Utah's swing piece, saying he could finish games when the Jazz need speed, switching and an extra player who can attack space. Coach Will Hardy has been openly positive about him in public comments.
The skeptic's argument is that touches are scarce. Yahoo Sports notes that George, Peterson, Markkanen and Jackson all need the ball, which could box Bailey into a limited offensive role. The Jazz added Jackson and Peterson, which Fox Sports said left him in an uncertain spot. He shot 2-of-8 in the Pelicans start and did not close the game. Heavy.com flagged a first half in which he played 13 minutes without scoring. A first-unit job that came from a lineup tweak could also be taken back.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether Bailey keeps a starting job or settles into a sixth-man, swing role. It matters because of the closing minutes. Heavy.com's depth chart had him as a backup. RotoWire has him replacing Hayes in the starting five. Yahoo Sports argues that starting matters less than whether Hardy trusts him to finish close games. The first start ended with Hayes closing over him.
