Devin Vassell
Vassell is the fifth starter beside Fox, Castle, Harper and Wembanyama, a complementary wing whose shot volume is capped by the crowded backcourt.
Role
Coach Mitch Johnson said the starting five is Fox, Castle, Harper, Vassell and Wembanyama for the season opener against the Thunder (ESPN, about 9 days old). That group first started together in a preseason win over Phoenix on Oct 14. Vassell started 65 of his 67 regular-season games in 2025-26 and averaged 30.5 minutes (Rotowire via CBS). I found no reported minutes or usage figure for 2026-27. The wire rest note was for the Oct 12 preseason game against Utah, and he was back on Oct 14. Tobias Harris is the other wing option: he was out with a calf injury in mid-October and had missed time in the group before the opener. I did not find his current status or role. I did not read a live depth chart or minutes tracker, and I found no reporting on back-to-back rest plans.
Air Alamo argues he should be safe as a starter and a featured piece because of his off-ball gravity, shooting, midrange game and underrated defense. Fox, Castle and Harper are not good shooters, which makes his spacing more valuable. Vassell said he showed physicality in the playoffs, and Fox has pointed to shooting as the key to the lineup. He also thrived in a complementary role on the team's Finals run, per Rotowire's recap.
ESPN's fantasy blurb says Castle, Harper and Fox all have prominent offensive roles, so Vassell may face more competition for shots. Rotowire's note says it is hard to see his usage rising beside Wembanyama, Fox, Castle and Harper. Reporting on the three-guard group also showed early shooting trouble, and he went 1-for-4 from three in one game.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Vassell keeps a real offensive role or becomes a spot-up piece in the three-guard lineup. Air Alamo expects him to be featured and high-volume. Rotowire and ESPN expect his usage to stay flat or fall. His starting job itself is not in dispute in what I found, though the three-guard group's fit is, and a change there could affect him.
