Duncan Robinson

Consensus #45 · SF16 · tier 4Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Robinson is a starting-shooting-guard three-point specialist for Detroit, and his value comes almost entirely from volume from deep.

Role

Per Rotowire and CBS Sports game notes, he started at shooting guard in the Oct. 21 opener against Boston (28 minutes) and played 28 minutes in the Oct. 24 win over Miami. ESPN's splits show two games at 27.5 minutes. He spaces the floor around Cade Cunningham. I found no beat-writer or tracker piece on the full starting five, and no word on back-to-back rest. The names competing for his minutes in the available coverage are from last spring's playoff injury notes (Daniss Jenkins, Marcus Sasser, Javonte Green), so I can't say who is behind him now.

The case for

He has started both games, playing 28 minutes each with five threes in each (21 points, then 17). CBS Sports (Oct. 21) calls his starting role and high-volume shooting a clear path to three-point production. Rotowire (preseason) expected him to start and give Cunningham spacing.

The case against

CBS Sports (Oct. 24) says he adds little outside shooting, so his output depends heavily on shooting efficiency. A Detroit Jock City column from the previous season argued he becomes a liability when his shot isn't falling and that younger players should take his minutes. That column is a year old, and I found nothing like it this season.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on the role so far: starter, about 28 minutes, shooting-dependent. The open question is durability of the minutes, meaning whether his shooting slumps or a younger wing cut into them. I found no current analyst making that argument this season. Two games is a very small sample.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
