Grayson Allen

Consensus #101 · SF38 · tier 6Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Allen is Charlotte's sixth-man scorer and spot-up shooter. His minutes and usage are higher right now only because Kon Knueppel and Coby White are out, and they will drop when those two return.

Role

Allen came off the bench in the Oct. 21 opener at Brooklyn and played 28:48 (21 points, 4 turnovers). Yahoo's player page (checked Oct. 26) shows him averaging 17.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists so far. Knueppel (hamstring), White (calf) and Grant Williams (hamstring) missed Charlotte's first three games and were ruled out for the Heat game. Coach Charles Lee has given no timeline, and Deadspin says no target date is set for Knueppel. I did not find who starts in their absence. A FanSided preview had Brandon Miller starting and Allen on the bench. Its preseason lineup was Schroder, Miller, O'Neale, Reid and Diabate. Yahoo says Schroder and Allen could keep increased roles. The ESPN depth chart I fetched via search lists Allen as Knueppel's backup at shooting guard. I did not read it live, and its snippet is undated, so treat it with caution. I found no back-to-back rest plan. The knee issue behind the preseason absences was not listed on the injury report for opening night, and I found no later knee update.

The case for

He is one of the league's best high-volume shooters. A Roundtable item says only Curry, Bane and Allen have made 800 or more threes at 40% or better since 2021-22. In 27 starts for Phoenix last season he averaged 17.6 points and 4.1 assists per Fox Sports. Charlotte's injuries have given him a bigger role, and he has produced in it. If Knueppel or White stays out longer, he could take starter-level minutes.

The case against

He is 31 and his knee kept him out of three preseason games. His current production rests on Knueppel and White being out. Once they return, he drops back to a bench role behind a deep guard group of Knueppel, White, Schroder and Sion James. Our data shows only 3 games and 246 minutes last season, so there is little recent sample behind his current numbers. Four turnovers in the opener show the risk of heavier playmaking.

Where analysts split

The open question is how long Knueppel and White stay out, which decides whether Allen plays starter-level minutes or settles into a bench role. The coverage I found does not frame this as a debate among analysts. It is an unanswered injury timeline, and the club has given no return dates.
