Luguentz Dort

Consensus #257 · SF105 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Dort is a defense-first wing who joined Atlanta from Oklahoma City in an offseason trade. The coverage I found is almost all preseason, and his regular-season role is not yet established in anything I read.

Role

Preseason evidence only. Rotowire (Oct 10) had him starting one preseason game at Indiana, and the reason given was Nickeil Alexander-Walker resting. Soaring Down South (about 6 days old) says Quin Snyder used him as the backup power forward behind Jalen Johnson in a nine-man rotation in the Oct 16 Dallas game. An ESPN fantasy blurb says he played a substantial second-unit role in a win over the Magic, with 8 points in 28 minutes. I could not date that game, so I can't say it was this season. FantasyData's depth chart snippet listed him second at SF behind Dyson Daniels, but I only saw it in a search result and did not fetch the page. I found no usage rate or confirmed regular-season minutes split. The Oct 12 rest note was a maintenance day for most Hawks regulars, and Rotowire said he would return for the Oct 16 finale.

The case for

SI's trade analysis argues he is an elite defender who fits the roster. It says he can guard bigger forwards, gives Atlanta lineup flexibility, and lets CJ McCollum be a sixth starter to stay fresh. It also notes he has played 65 or more games in each of the past four years. Soaring Down South says Atlanta is counting on him to hit open threes to space the floor for Johnson, Alexander-Walker and Daniels. Another SI projection saw a real chance he enters the starting lineup.

The case against

His offense is the concern. Per our data and reporting, he averaged 8.3 points on 38.5% shooting from the field and 34.4% from three with the Thunder in 2025-26 (FantasyData). SI warned that his poor shooting would make him hard to pair with Daniels. ESPN's fantasy note says Atlanta's crowd of perimeter scorers could limit his offensive opportunities. FantasyData adds that his value could take a hit if he comes off the bench behind Daniels and Alexander-Walker. Playing him at power forward also risks trouble against double-big lineups.

Where analysts split

The split is starter or bench. SI's projection saw the last starting spot as a choice between Dort and Alexander-Walker, while FantasyData's depth chart snippet and ESPN's second-unit note point to a bench role. The second question is position. Soaring Down South reports Snyder using him at backup power forward, not on the wing, and that is a new role for him.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
