Matisse Thybulle
Thybulle is a defense-first wing who has started games for the Lakers this preseason and early season, but whether the starting job lasts is not settled in the reporting I found.
Role
Reporting is mixed. The California Post (via Yahoo, about four days old) says he would see time in the Lakers' secondary rotation because rookie Cameron Carr (right oblique strain) and Adou Thiero (left knee effusion) were out. He averaged 20 minutes in four preseason games. ESPN's fantasy blurb says the Lakers appear willing to trust him with minutes in the mid-20s. RotoWire says he started the preseason opener against the Kings, and the LA Times (via Hoops Rumors) says he and Ziaire Williams started together. A hottakes.com post dated today says he starts Sunday against the Jazz alongside Doncic, Reaves, Jalen Williams and Kessler. That is a low-quality source and I could not confirm it elsewhere. I did not open any depth chart or rotation tracker, so I cannot say who starts on a given night. Coach Redick said he might use six or seven wings in a game. The October 6 rest note was for a preseason game and says nothing about regular-season rest. I found no reporting on back-to-backs.
Optimists point to his defense. He had at least seven steals in the first two training-camp practices, and Redick praised how he jumps passing lanes. Reaves named him as a player who will make the Lakers a nasty defensive team. He has averaged 2.1 steals over the last two seasons while shooting 41.1% from three (NBC Sports). If he keeps starting and plays mid-20s minutes, he can put up steals and blocks quickly. Last year's line in our data is only 3 games, so it tells us little.
Skeptics point to his health and the crowded wing group. Yahoo notes he played only 49 games, playoffs included, over the last two seasons, and he signed for the veteran minimum. The LA Times says Williams and Thybulle will face challenges for regular minutes from Thiero, Carr and others. His current opening is partly the result of other wings being hurt. When they return, his minutes could shrink. Reporting describes him as a limited offensive player, not a high-usage one.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether he holds a starting or steady rotation spot once the injured wings (Carr, Thiero) return, or becomes one of six or seven wings Redick rotates. Coverage of his minutes ranges from a secondary rotation role to mid-20s minutes to starter. I found no analyst who has settled this.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
