Terrence Shannon Jr.
Terrence Shannon Jr. is a fringe-to-low-end bench wing on a Timberwolves team that has added on-ball competition, and his minutes are not secure.
Role
Fox Sports' player page (seen in search, undated) says he was to come off the bench in the regular-season opener against the Heat, after starting the preseason finale while the regulars rested. An SI projection published 4 days ago expects a double-digit minutes role that could shrink if his struggles continue. Dunking with Wolves (10 days ago) has him averaging 17.8 minutes over four preseason games, with The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski saying Bones Hyland is pushing into the bench rotation. I found no regular-season minutes or usage figures, and no confirmed starting five or minutes split beyond the opener note.
Coach Chris Finch said he mishandled Shannon last season by using him as an off-ball catch-and-shoot player. When Donte DiVincenzo tore his Achilles, Shannon averaged 22.6 minutes, 11.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He is a strong transition threat, and the Wolves want to play faster. He also scored 19 points with six rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes against the Heat on Oct. 10, in a preseason game the starters skipped.
Over his first two seasons he has averaged only 11.7 minutes a game, and the Wolves have never settled on a role for him. Dunking with Wolves says he has struggled alongside the starters and could end up as the odd man out, and even floats a trade. The Fox page says Minnesota's offseason additions don't suit his skill set. An SI preseason piece called his preseason underwhelming. He also missed a preseason game with an undisclosed issue, which Fox's page notes but does not explain.
Where analysts split
Whether Shannon holds a steady bench spot once Hyland and the other reserve guards and wings are healthy and playing, or sees his minutes shrink or disappear. SI expects a double-digit minutes role. Dunking with Wolves, citing Krawczynski, sees the Hyland competition as a real threat to his playing time.
