Tristan da Silva

Consensus #99 · SF37 · tier 6Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Tristan da Silva looks like Orlando's top reserve forward behind Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero, a floor spacer who starts only when someone is out.

Role

Coverage points to a bench role. CBS (October preseason) expects a meaningful role off the bench behind Banchero. Orlando Magic Daily's projected lineup, about 55 days old, lists Wagner as the SF starter, da Silva as the reserve and Jamal Cain on the deep bench. In preseason he started once, on Oct. 11, when Desmond Bane rested, then went back to the bench. In that game he played 24 minutes. Another preseason game, Oct. 7, was 25 minutes off the bench. I found no published regular-season minutes or usage figures, and I did not read a live depth chart or rotation tracker. Noah Penda and Jamal Cain are named as competition for forward minutes. Sean Sweeney is the head coach this season.

The case for

Optimists say he is poised for a big year. He improved his scoring and shooting efficiency over his rookie season. He shot 37.4 percent from three, per Orlando Magic Daily. He took 11 threes in one preseason game, more than a third of the reserves' three-point attempts in that game. He can start when injuries hit, and the Magic need a reliable forward to spell Banchero and Wagner. The team also picked up his 2027-28 option, so he is under contract through that season.

The case against

Skeptics say his role is capped. Orlando's frontcourt is crowded, and CBS says he may start less often this season if Banchero and Wagner stay healthy. He barely played for much of the first-round playoff series against Detroit before getting 23 minutes in Game 6. Orlando Magic Daily said he went 2 for 11 from three in two World Cup qualifying games and tends to fade into the background. His fantasy ceiling depends on how much offense he gets, which is not guaranteed.

Where analysts split

The split is whether he is a steady rotation piece with growing offensive involvement, as the Yahoo/SI Magic coverage argues, or a role player capped by Wagner, Banchero, Penda and Cain, as Fox Sports and Orlando Magic Daily suggest. The open question is how many minutes he gets when everyone is healthy. Regular-season data on that is not in what I found.
