Consensus #78 · SF30 · tier 5Week 3: 4 gamesOutUpdated Oct 26

Williams is the Lakers' starting point-of-attack wing defender through the first week of the season, and he comes with a long injury history.

Role

He started both of the Lakers' first two games. ESPN's game log has him at 24 minutes against Golden State on Oct. 21 (9 points) and 31 minutes against the Clippers on Oct. 23 (14 points on 5-of-7 shooting). Yahoo's opener preview put him in the first five with Dončić, Reaves, Thybulle and Kessler. It said Redick planned a short rotation because Sexton, Thiero and Carr were out to start the season. The coaches have told him to be a main point-of-attack defender and to play off Dončić and Reaves on offense (Orange County Register, via Silver Screen and Roll). Competition for the wing minutes includes Grimes, Thybulle, Vanderbilt, LaRavia and Knecht, per preseason coverage. I did not read a current minutes tracker, so I have no usage rate and no back-to-back plan. His last-season line in our data shows only 3 GP, but the articles describe a 56-game season in Brooklyn, so I am not using that line.

The case for

He is 6-foot-9 and defends multiple positions. The Lakers lost Marcus Smart and need someone to take the toughest perimeter matchup, and Williams says he embraces that job. ESPN's fantasy note expects him to keep the starting spot for his defense. He also gets looks from Dončić and Reaves, and his career-high 10.2 points last season came on 34.3% three-point shooting. Redick praised him and Thybulle after the Clippers win.

The case against

He is thin at 185 pounds and has missed games every season: 26 in 2025-26, 19 in 2024-25, 31 in 2023-24, 45 in 2022-23 and 20 in 2021-22 (LakeShowLife). He has never shot better than 35% from three, and LakeShowLife called him an inefficient shooter whose defense is his calling card. The starting job rests on a short rotation, and the injured wings could return. A foot issue kept him out of a preseason game, and the wire says he was a full participant in Thursday's practice. The sample is only two games.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether he keeps the fifth starting spot once Sexton, Thiero and Carr are healthy, or whether the Lakers pick a more reliable shooter or a different defender. Preseason coverage called the wing minutes unsettled apart from Grimes, while early-season coverage treats him as the starter. I found no analyst making a firm call either way.

Injury: Out: assessed real

Left foot injury, third straight absence

Williams has now missed three straight games with a foot injury and is ruled out again; LaRavia, Grimes and Mamukelashvili are absorbing his minutes, so he's not a viable fantasy play until he's back and shows his role is intact.

What would change this: Confirmation he returns to practice or is upgraded off the injury report, and whether he reclaims his starting role once back.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
