Anthony Edwards
Edwards is Minnesota's lead scorer and first option, and he has started the 2026-27 season at a high level, with LaMelo Ball now beside him.
Role
Starting guard. In the opener he played 33 minutes, and ESPN's log shows 33 minutes at Orlando and 28 minutes against Toronto on Oct. 25 in a blowout win. The SI and Yahoo preseason takeaways say coach Finch wants Ball and Edwards on the floor together rather than staggered. Donte DiVincenzo's absence leaves the second unit thin (Yahoo/SI, about Oct. 19). Jaden McDaniels is the other main scorer beside him. I did not read a published starting five or minutes tracker, so lineup details beyond this are unconfirmed.
He scored 45 points in the opener on 9 threes, with 10 rebounds and strong perimeter defense (Yahoo, Oct. 22). The Star Tribune argues Ball creating easier looks gives him a real MVP-caliber path, and McDaniels has said publicly that this could be Edwards' MVP season. Rotowire notes he reached 20 or more points in the preseason, and his three-point shooting held up at an elite level in the preseason, per SI.
Availability and efficiency are the worries. Rotowire notes he played only 61 games last season, the first time in his career under 72, and he sat out the preseason finale for rest. SI noted he looked a step slow in the preseason. He shot 5-for-23 at Orlando on Oct. 23 (ESPN). Sharing the ball with Ball could also lower his usage and shot volume from last year's career-best scoring.
Where analysts split
Whether Ball's arrival lifts Edwards (easier looks, an MVP-level season, per the Star Tribune) or trims his volume and workload (Yahoo says the plan was to lighten his load) is the open question. Two games and a rest day do not settle it. Our card shows only 3 games last season, which conflicts with the 61 games in Rotowire and CBS, so I have not used any last-season figures.
Injury: Out: assessed avoid
Knee debridement surgery, out indefinitely
Edwards had arthroscopic knee surgery with no official timetable; outside reporting suggests up to two months, meaning he should be considered unavailable for roughly the next several weeks of fantasy lineups.
What would change this: An official team update on his return timeline or any practice participation report as rehab progresses.
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
