Cedric Coward
Coward is a starting wing in year two who has produced across the board early, and the one open question is a wrist issue that has already cost him a game.
Role
He has started when healthy. NBC Sports (Oct 27) said he returned to the starting lineup after missing the Warriors game, and that GG Jackson went back to the bench and played 10 minutes. His NBA.com game log (read Nov 2) shows 32, 31, 27 and 23 minutes over the last four games, and 28 in the opener. ESPN lists 28.2 minutes per game over 5 games. He missed Oct 24 vs. Golden State, when Jackson started and played 15 minutes and Jerami Grant played 26 (NBC). The wire has him questionable for Sunday in Sacramento. I could not confirm from the sources I read which Sunday game that refers to or whether the report is still live. The game log shows a Memphis home game vs. SAC on Oct 31 and an Oct 25 game at SAC. I did not find a rest or back-to-back plan.
The year-two leap has been highly anticipated, and he is producing in several categories. He had double-doubles in two of his first three games (11 rebounds each). His 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists vs. Portland drew praise for his defense and rebounding (SI, Oct 30). Memphis is 5-0 per that SI recap. He has shot well from three on the small early sample (ESPN: 61.9% over 5 games).
The minutes are not locked. They dropped to 23 in the latest game, and the wrist has already cost him a game, with Jackson stepping in to start. His rookie-year shooting from three was 35.8% (ESPN career line), so the early hot start may not hold. The sample is only 5 games, and he was also on a minutes restriction at one point last season, so his workload has been managed before. I did not find a current report on whether any restriction applies now.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on his role: the sources I read describe him as the starter when healthy. The open questions are whether the wrist limits him, and whether Jackson keeps the starting job in games where Coward sits.
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
