Donovan Mitchell

Consensus #15 · SG8 · tier 3Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Mitchell is Cleveland's No. 1 scorer and primary playmaker through the first two games, with no injury designation, and he is sharing the backcourt with James Harden.

Role

He started the season with 35 minutes against Philadelphia on Oct. 22 and 35 minutes against Brooklyn on Oct. 24 (ESPN and CBS pages, checked Oct. 26). He scored 32 and 22 points in those games. His rivals for offensive touches are James Harden, who re-signed with Cleveland, and Evan Mobley (CBS/Rotowire). I did not find a published usage rate, a starting-five listing, or any back-to-back rest plan, so I report none. In the preseason, all five Cleveland starters played exactly 17 minutes against Boston on Oct. 9 (Rotowire). Rotowire said that workload should not worry anyone about his regular-season role.

The case for

CBS and Rotowire say his role as the No. 1 scorer and primary playmaker looks set in stone. They also say he has a high fantasy floor among shooting guards. He averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 33.5 minutes over 70 games in 2025-26. Rotowire noted he did not lose notable fantasy value after Harden arrived at last year's trade deadline. He has also agreed to a four-year, $273 million extension.

The case against

Harden may take more usage than Darius Garland did, per Rotowire's Aug. 20 note. CBS also warns that sharing offensive work with Harden and Mobley could cause occasional swings in his usage and assist totals. The sample is only two games, and he turned the ball over 4 times in each of the first two games, per ESPN's averages. He is 30 and his minutes have drifted down in recent years. Rotowire attributed an earlier minutes drop to blowout wins and backcourt depth.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role. The only open question is how much Harden's presence trims Mitchell's usage and assists, and the two-game sample cannot settle it yet.
