Aleksander Barkov

Consensus #87 · C31 · tier 10Week 5: 4 gamesIRUpdated Nov 2

Barkov is a top-line center who is out with a left knee injury, and his coach put his return at about four weeks after Oct. 29, so he is not a near-term lineup piece.

Role

NHL.com (Oct. 29) calls him Florida's captain and top-line center. He is on long-term IR, so he has no current line. Inside the Rink, citing Daily Faceoff's projected lines for Nov. 2, shows Sam Bennett centering Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk on line 1. Reinhart centers line 2 and Lundell line 3. I did not read Daily Faceoff's own page. The Rink's PP1 lists no center, and Barkov appears on no unit. I found nothing on where he would slot, on his power-play role or on his ice time after he returns. His 2025-26 season was lost to right-knee reconstructive surgery, and he played 2 games this season before this injury.

The case for

The injury is to the left knee, not the right knee that needed ACL and MCL surgery (Palm Beach Post via Yahoo). The team said no surgery is needed. ESPN's sources said the MRI did not show the worst case. He resumed skating Oct. 28, and Paul Maurice said they are happy with where he and Marchand are.

The case against

This is a second knee injury in a row, and he has played only 2 games across two seasons. The earliest timelines were longer: the club's Oct. 6 estimate was six to eight weeks. Maurice's roughly four weeks is a coach's estimate, not a firm date, and a return can slip. Florida has also managed without him, with Bennett in the top-line center spot.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on the injury: reporting is consistent that it is a non-surgical left-knee injury with a return of about four weeks after Oct. 29. I found no analyst split on his role. The open question is how Florida redistributes the center spots when he is back, and no source I found addresses it.

Injury: IR: assessed avoid

Lower-body injury, on LTIR

Barkov is on long-term injured reserve and skating again but still roughly four weeks from return per the coach, consistent with the expected 2026-11-27 timetable. Not a lineup consideration for the next several weeks.

What would change this: Any update on him practicing with the team or a tightened return date from Paul Maurice.
