Auston Matthews

Consensus #12 · C4 · tier 4Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Matthews is Toronto's top-line center and a first-unit power-play fixture. The wire note says day-to-day, and I found no practice report or coach update on it dated after that note.

Role

ESPN's line-combination page (fetched 2 Nov) has him centering the first line between Gavin McKenna and Jack Roslovic, and on PP1 with McKenna and William Nylander. It lists Roslovic on the PP1 point and Easton Cowan, Nick Paul and Vinni Lettieri on PP2. The Leafs Nation lineup piece (4 days old) and its follow-up (2 days old) both project the same McKenna-Matthews-Roslovic line. A Hockey Stove page about 11 days old shows his ice time at 20:36 a game, with 3:36 of it on the power play. He has also skated with Marchenko, Cowan and Nylander on the wing this season. Marchenko and Tavares are on injured reserve per ESPN, which thins the wing options behind him.

The case for

McKenna has been dominant on the power play, per Leafs Nation, and his playmaking suits Matthews. Matthews's shot is the line's focus, with Roslovic cast as the setup man. With Tavares and Marchenko out, the Leafs lean on this line even more. Matthews is also getting steady power-play time.

The case against

The wingers beside him have changed often. Marchenko, Cowan, Nylander and McKenna have all started games on his line, so his linemates are not settled. Goaltending has been a problem: Leafs Nation wrote about Bobrovsky's awful start, and the Leafs have lost several close games. The cause and length of the day-to-day tag have not been confirmed, and a missed game or two would cost him production.

Where analysts split

The open question is who stays on his wing now that Marchenko and Tavares are out. Leafs Nation suggests McKenna could make a permanent case to stay with Matthews, but earlier lineups had Marchenko and Cowan there. I found no analyst split on Matthews himself.
