Alex Tuch

Consensus #48 · RW12 · tier 6Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Alex Tuch is a top-six winger on a deep Capitals forward group, and he has shuffled between the first and second lines over the first weeks of the season.

Role

The Inside the Rink preview for the 11/01 Wild game (published 1 day ago) projects him on line 2 at left wing with Dylan Strome and Jordan Kyrou. It has Aliaksei Protas, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Tom Wilson on line 1. The same preview puts him on the second power-play unit with Ilya Protas, Dubois, Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson. It also has him on the second penalty-kill unit with Aliaksei Protas, Jakob Chychrun and Timothy Liljegren. The Morning Puck page (indexed 16 days ago) also shows him at left wing on line 2 with Strome and Kyrou, and on the power play. Dobber's Frozen Tools data for the 10/29 Nashville game shows him with Strome and Kyrou for 6:32 of even-strength time. It also shows shorter stretches with Dubois, Leonard and Ilya Protas. Early in the season he played left wing on Dubois' line with Wilson, and the Capitals' home-opener coverage (about 25 days old) said he spent the preseason adjusting to the new position. Daily Faceoff's page loaded only a stale 2025 version when I fetched it, so I am not reporting what it says today. Ice time per game is not in what I found.

The case for

He started the season on the Dubois-Wilson line, which Russian Machine Never Breaks said would likely get many of the hardest assignments. He scored twice in his Capitals debut, and coach Spencer Carbery called him "arguably the best player on the ice." He also has second power-play and penalty-kill minutes, so his usage goes beyond even strength. Last season's line (10 G, 12 PTS in 13 GP, 37 SOG) shows a high shot rate in a small sample.

The case against

He has dropped from the Dubois-Wilson line to the second line in the most recent projections. His power-play role is the second unit, not the first, which the Inside the Rink preview gives to Wilson, Strome, Kyrou, Ovechkin and Chychrun. He is also playing out of position at left wing. Last season he had 0 power-play points in only 13 games, so that sample says little about his scoring.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether he returns to the Dubois-Wilson line or stays on the Strome-Kyrou line. Sources disagree on this because the lines have changed during the season. The earlier coverage had him on the top line, while the 11/01 and Morning Puck projections have him on line 2. I found no analyst commentary that explicitly argues either side.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
