William Nylander

Consensus #40 · RW8 · tier 5Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Nylander is a top-line or second-line winger who stays on the first power-play unit, but which line he plays on has changed repeatedly and a day-to-day note is attached.

Role

Recent pre-game reporting has him at right wing on the second line with Easton Cowan and Nick Paul. Leafs Nation lists that trio for the Kraken game (4 days old). David Alter's practice tweet from Oct. 30 shows the same trio. A Leafs beat-tweet aggregator also shows a version where he plays with Matthews and Jack Roslovic, and a Leafs Nation preview has Gavin McKenna on the top line instead. Maple Leafs Hot Stove (11 days old) shows him averaging 20:07 a game, including 3:28 on the power play. Beat-writer tweets and several trackers show him on the first power-play unit with Matthews, Marchenko, McKenna and Raddysh. Daily Faceoff's page turned up in search, but my fetch of it failed, so I am not reporting what it says today. Competition for his line spots comes from Cowan, Marchenko, McKenna and Roslovic. The wire report says day-to-day, and I found no practice report or coach update on it dated after that.

The case for

He sits on the first power-play unit next to Matthews and has played with Matthews at times this season. Our data shows 21 points in 16 games with 46 shots on goal, and 7 of those points came on the power play. A Yardbarker piece argues that putting Matthews and Nylander together should give the offense a spark. Cowan and Paul have also been reported to have built chemistry with him on the second line.

The case against

His line has not been stable. Deep Metric Analytics rated Toronto's top six only 24.8% stable as of Oct. 31. One tracker shows him with Matthews and Roslovic on the top line, while the latest beat reports have him with Cowan and Paul. That gap could cost him ice time or the best linemates. Maple Leafs Hot Stove lists his 5v5 shot share at 43.3%, and the team has been losing games. Day-to-day status could also cost him games, and I could not find what the injury is or any timeline.

Where analysts split

Whether Nylander plays on the top line with Matthews or anchors a second line with Cowan and Paul. Sources disagree because coach Hiller has used both setups and a rookie, McKenna, keeps moving between lines. Nylander's first power-play unit spot looks secure in the sources I found.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
