Anton Lundell

Consensus #194 · C62 · tier 10Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Anton Lundell is a third-line center who plays a lot of penalty kill and gets second-unit power-play time. His scoring ceiling depends on the Panthers' injured centers, Barkov and Marchand, staying out.

Role

ESPN's Panthers line page, fetched 2 November, has Lundell at center on the third line between Eetu Luostarinen and Lars Eller. The same page puts that trio on the second power-play unit and has Lundell with Luostarinen on the second penalty-kill pair. A game preview on Inside the Rink dated today lists the same line, and also lists Lundell on the second power-play unit and the first penalty-kill unit, so the two sources differ on which PK unit. The wing next to him has changed: a hockeydata.ai page (undated) and a Frozen Pool game from 1 October show Sandis Vilmanis on his right side, while ESPN now has Vilmanis on the second line. Ahead of him at center are Sam Bennett on the first line and Sam Reinhart on the second. I did not find ice-time figures for this season, so I am not quoting any.

The case for

He already has a defined role: a full third-line shift, second power-play time and penalty-kill minutes, on a team that was 8-4-2 going into tonight's game against Detroit (Inside the Rink, 2 November). ESPN lists Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand on injured reserve. If either one's absence pushes Lundell into more offensive minutes or a higher line, his role grows. A Frozen Pool card from early October showed a high shooting percentage, but I could not read the full card, so treat that as unverified. Last season he took 42 shots in 14 games.

The case against

He is a checking-style center on the third line. ESPN's page has him on the second power-play unit, behind a first unit of Verhaeghe, Reinhart and Matthew Tkachuk. Last season he had no power-play points in 14 games and 6 points in total. The penalty-kill work adds minutes but few points. The top six is Bennett, Reinhart, the two Tkachuks and Verhaeghe, so a move up would probably need an injury or a reshuffle.

Where analysts split

The sources I read do not argue the point directly. The open question is how Lundell's role changes if Barkov or Marchand returns or stays out, and I found no timeline for either. A smaller disagreement is whether he is on the first or second penalty-kill unit, and whether he keeps Vilmanis or Eller on his wing. I did not reach Daily Faceoff, The Athletic or a beat writer, so I found no analyst debate.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
