Martin Necas

Consensus #19 · C9 · tier 6Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Martin Necas is the first-line right wing and a first-unit power-play forward on Colorado, and the lineup pages I read agree on that as of Nov. 1-2.

Role

Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched Nov. 2, last updated Nov. 1) has him at right wing on the top line with Artturi Lehkonen and Nathan MacKinnon. It puts him on the first power-play unit with T.J. Hughes, Nazem Kadri, Cale Makar and MacKinnon. The second unit is Lehkonen, Gabriel Landeskog, Jaden Schwartz, Devon Toews and Brock Nelson. Inside the Rink's Oct. 31 game preview shows the same top line and first unit. ESPN's line page, indexed 12 days ago, lists the same trio and a first power-play group of MacKinnon, Kadri and Necas. Colorado Hockey Now's change log shows he moved between first-line and second-line right wing in late October, but the snippet is garbled and I can't date the moves reliably. I found no ice-time figures for this season. Nicolas Roy is slotted at right wing on the second line, and Gavin Brindley is listed as an extra.

The case for

He sits beside MacKinnon and on the top power-play unit. Inside the Rink's Oct. 31 preview says he leads Colorado with six goals on 3.9 expected goals, with a 59.9% Corsi-for and 69.9 shot attempts for per 60 on the ice. That points to real volume, not just a hot streak. The same preview has Colorado at 7-5-1.

The case against

The six goals are well above his 3.9 expected goals, so some of that scoring may not last. Colorado Hockey Now's change log shows him moving between the first and second line in October, so the MacKinnon spot may not be fixed. The 14 games and 18 points in last season's line from our data are a small sample for judging a full-season baseline. I found no source explaining why he played only 14.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role. Every lineup source I read has him at first-line right wing and on the first power-play unit. I found no analyst piece arguing against that deployment. The only open question I can point to is whether the six goals on 3.9 expected goals hold up, and I found no commentary taking a side on it.
