Brayden Point

Consensus #120 · C43 · tier 10Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Point is the first-line center between Jake Guentzel and Nikita Kucherov and a first power-play unit regular, and the early-season coverage I found treats his slow power-play start as bad luck rather than a role change.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Lightning page (fetched, last updated 31 October) has Point at center on the top line, with Guentzel at left wing and Kucherov at right wing. The same page puts him on the first power-play unit with Guentzel, Kucherov, Brandon Hagel and Charle-Edouard D'Astous. Anthony Cirelli centers the second line and runs the second power-play unit. SI's game preview (1 November) and Inside the Rink's preview (31 October) both list the same top line. One exception: Frozen Pool's last-game table for 24 October shows Point with Kucherov and Gage Goncalves for part of a game against Utah, with Guentzel on a different line. I found no ice-time figure for this season, so I am not stating one.

The case for

The underlying numbers are strong while the results lag. Inside the Rink (31 October) cites Box Score Junkie at 62.9% Corsi-for, 80.1 shot attempts for per 60, and 9.0 high-danger expected goals on ice, with Point 1.5 goals below expected. It notes he scored on three shots in his last outing. Dobber Hockey's Khurram Sher (20 October) called Point a buy-low candidate because Tampa's power play had fallen from 20.7% last year to 10.7%. Sher called that drought unsustainable with Kucherov running the man advantage and noted Point had no power-play points at that time.

The case against

Last season Point played only 13 games and posted 11 points, 2 of them on the power play, so he has little recent healthy production to point to. This season's power play has been poor, and the Lightning's 5v5 shooting percentage was reported as higher than their 5v4 percentage. Sher noted that D'Astous took first-unit time over John Carlson in one game, so the power-play makeup is not fully settled. Frozen Pool's 24 October table shows Point's line was out-attempted that game, and one game is a thin sample. Point is 30, and I found no current coverage arguing his role is at risk.

Where analysts split

The only live question is whether the power play recovers. Sher expects Tampa's man advantage to rebound because its shooting is out of line with its talent. The result so far is a weak power play, and the open question is whether it improves with Point on the top unit. The second question is who fills the fifth spot on that unit: Daily Faceoff has D'Astous, while earlier practice and Sher's note show Carlson in that role. I found no analyst arguing that Point's line spot is in doubt.
