Brock Boeser

Consensus #191 · RW38 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Boeser is a top-line right wing on a first-unit power play, and his current deployment is more settled than the October shuffling suggests.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Canucks line page, fetched 2 November and last updated 31 October, lists Jake DeBrusk, Elias Pettersson and Boeser as the first line. It also puts him on the first power-play unit with DeBrusk, Pettersson, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Filip Hronek, and on the second penalty-kill unit. The page does not show ice time. The Morning Puck page (indexed about 15 days ago, not re-read) showed him at 19:45 in one game. Canucks Army's 31 October Statsies recap says DeBrusk, Pettersson and Boeser played 10:26 together at five-on-five against Toronto. The same trio started on the power play on 27 October per Inside the Rink and Puckfeed (both read as search snippets). Earlier in October he was often on a second line. A 17 October game log had him with Filip Chytil and Paul Cotter, and CBS/Rotowire in early October described him as second line with first-unit power-play time. ESPN's page, indexed about 7 days ago, lists Chytil on injured reserve. Marco Rossi, Lekkerimaki and Drew O'Connor are the other forwards in the top-six conversation.

The case for

He is on the top line next to Pettersson on the first power-play unit, and the power play was where most of his production came from. Last season's 13 points in 16 games included 8 power-play points. He has also scored on the power play this season, per Rotowire on 14 October. Canucks Army's recap noted the DeBrusk, Pettersson and Boeser trio was among the club's strongest combinations against San Jose.

The case against

The deployment has not been stable. Coach Malhotra has rotated Boeser through several lines, including with Cotter, Chytil and Rossi, and the top line fell to 40.91% of shot attempts and 23.60 xGF% against Toronto on 31 October. Last season's line was only 16 games, a minus-9 and 23 shots, which is a small and uneven sample. Another shuffle could drop him back to the second line, which would mean fewer minutes and less offensive-zone time.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether Boeser stays on the DeBrusk and Pettersson line or goes back to a second-line spot with Cotter or Rossi, as he did in practices and games earlier in October. The power-play role looks steadier than the five-on-five line. I did not find a named analyst arguing either side, so this comes from the lineup record and one advanced-stats recap rather than an explicit debate.
