Bryan Rust

Consensus #149 · RW30 · tier 9Week 5: 4 gamesIRUpdated Nov 2

Rust is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and will be re-evaluated after six weeks, so he is a long-term absence, and the club has not promised a return at the end of that window.

Role

Before the injury, a Penguins report (via rg.org, about 13 days old) had him on the right side of the top line with Sidney Crosby and Egor Chinakhov and on the first power-play unit. TSN had him averaging 17:22 of ice time this season. That included only 9:32 in the Utah game where he was hurt. He is not playing now. In the Oct. 24 game against Nashville, Dobber's Frozen Tools listed Crosby, Rickard Rakell and Tommy Novak as the top line. The sources I read do not say who has taken his power-play spot or who will replace him on the top line once the lines settle. I did not read Daily Faceoff's live line page, so I am not reporting what it shows today.

The case for

Before the injury he was on the top line and first power-play unit with Crosby. The supplied line shows 3 goals, 2 assists and 2 power-play points in 7 games, and he had a hand in both Pittsburgh goals before leaving the Utah game. Daily Faceoff says six weeks is a re-evaluation point, not a firm return date. If he comes back healthy, nothing I found suggests the top-line and power-play role is gone.

The case against

This is his second absence of the year, after missing the first three games with an upper-body injury from late preseason. Daily Faceoff notes he has now missed at least 10 games in five of his last six seasons. He is 34. The team has been losing (four straight, 1-6-1 in its last eight when Rust was hurt), and others are filling the top-six spots in the meantime. Six weeks is a minimum, and the re-evaluation could lead to a longer absence.

Lower-body injury, six-week re-evaluation

Rust is on IR with a lower-body injury and expects to be re-evaluated in about six weeks, with a possible move to LTIR; he is out for an extended stretch, well beyond day-to-day or short-term fantasy relevance.

What would change this: Any update on an LTIR transfer or a change to the six-week re-evaluation timeline.
