Cameron Hughes
Cameron Hughes is a fringe, waiver-wire-caliber bottom-six center whose season opened with an upper-body injury before he could even establish a camp role.
Role
Hughes was on Dallas's 57-man 2026-27 training camp roster (announced by the club, per NHL.com, mid-September 2026) as one of 33 forwards competing for a bottom-six or extra-forward spot. He does not have an established NHL role: last season he spent most of the year with AHL Texas, leading that team with 31 points in 37 games, and was only recalled to Dallas in late March 2026 amid a wave of forward injuries, slotting on the fourth line with Oskar Back and Arttu Hyry (Dallas Morning News, March 31, 2026). Per RotoWire (reporting Robert Tiffin of NHL.com, checked around September 22, 2026), Hughes suffered an upper-body injury on his first shift of a preseason exhibition win over St. Louis and was to be further evaluated; he currently carries an 'Out' designation as of the September 25, 2026 wire report. No return timeline has been given publicly.
He was the AHL's top scorer on Texas last season and has shown he can play a competent fourth-line, penalty-killing role when NHL injuries create an opening, so once healthy he remains a depth call-up option if Dallas's bottom six is hit by injuries again.
He is a 29-year-old career minor-leaguer with essentially no track record of NHL offensive production, was already fighting for a bottom-of-the-roster or taxi-squad spot before this injury, and an early camp injury only makes it easier for the club to option him to AHL Texas once healthy rather than carry him on the NHL roster.
Where analysts split
There is no real analyst disagreement to report here; coverage found is limited to injury-status reporting and camp-roster listings, not a debate over his role or upside.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
