Charlie Coyle
Coyle is a veteran center in Columbus's middle six who has been getting some power-play time, but current coverage is thin and I could not confirm his line or unit for tonight.
Role
The sources disagree on his line. A 5v5 Hockey projection dated Oct 18, 2026, which says it draws on Daily Faceoff pre-game reporting, had him on the third line between Cole Sillinger and Mathieu Olivier. It also had him at center on the first power-play unit with Matthew Knies, Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson and Zach Werenski. A line tweet from reporter Brian Hedger, carried on gamedaytweets and stamped Oct 31, 2026, had Knies-Coyle-Olivier in Dallas, with Nichushkin-Fantilli-Johnson ahead of them. That tweet has no power-play detail. A Dobber depth chart snippet showed Coyle at 19:24 total ice time and 3:22 on the power play through nine games. I could not verify when that snapshot was taken, so treat those numbers as unconfirmed. The fetch of Daily Faceoff's Blue Jackets line page returned only an offseason snapshot dated June 2025 with no lines, so I can't report what it says now. I did not find his penalty-kill role in current reporting. The competition for the center work is Fantilli, Sean Monahan and Sillinger, who has also been listed at center.
He signed a six-year, $36 million extension in May 2026, so his place is secure. He played in all situations last year and finished tied for first on the club in power-play goals, per the team release. The sources show him on the first power-play unit and between Knies and Olivier, and Dobber's snapshot has him with 8 points in 9 games. A middle-six center with first-unit power-play time has a clear path to steady production.
He is 34 and some projections list him on the third line. Dobber's snapshot shows only a small power-play share for his teammates behind the top group. Several sources have him on a different line or unit, so the first-unit power-play slot may not be secure. The early scoring may not hold, and I have no current data on the sustainability of his shot rates.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Coyle is a second-line center with Knies or a third-line center with Sillinger, and whether he holds the first power-play unit. The 5v5 Hockey projection (Oct 18) and the Oct 31 line tweet disagree on his line, and I found no analyst commentary arguing either side.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
