Elias Lindholm
Lindholm is a third-line center who plays shutdown minutes, kills penalties and has a spot on the first power-play unit, so his value comes from deployment and not from a scoring-line role.
Role
Inside the Rink's projected lines for the Nov. 2 game against Vegas and ESPN's line page list him as third-line center between Casey Mittelstadt and James Hagens. Boston.com (Oct. 31) calls that trio Marco Sturm's de facto shutdown line. The same article gives his usage as 2:45 of power-play time and 1:59 of shorthanded time per game, with a 60.2 percent faceoff rate. Inside the Rink's previews through Nov. 2 list him on PP1 with Geekie, Zacha, Pastrnak and McAvoy. He is also on the first penalty-kill unit with Khusnutdinov. Competition for center work includes Zacha (line 1), Minten (line 2 and PP2) and Mittelstadt, who is listed as a wing on the third line. Last season he had 15 GP, 12 PTS and 4 PPP. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff's page, so these lines come from secondary aggregators and Boston.com.
Boston.com's Oct. 31 piece says he has won over doubters this season. It says he looks like an impact player on the third line after feeling like a poor fit in the top six. Sturm praised his play from day one and his work in the circle, and says he uses him on the power play and penalty kill. The PP1 slot alongside Pastrnak and Zacha gives him a scoring route even from a third-line spot.
A shutdown role against top opposing lines, plus heavy penalty-kill work, limits offensive upside and puts his points mostly on the power play. Sources list him on the third line, with Zacha and Minten ahead of him at center. He was placed in the top six earlier and it did not fit, so a change in the lines could move him again. The ESPN page and the aggregator pages differ on how PP1 is made up, which shows how loosely that unit is described.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on his role in the sources I read: third-line shutdown center, PP1, first PK unit. I found no analyst debate. The one open question is whether the PP1 spot holds. Other aggregators list the unit differently (ESPN lists him with Zacha and Pastrnak and puts Geekie at defense). An early-October PuckCast snapshot also had him on PP1.
