Emmitt Finnie
Finnie is Detroit's first-line center as of the Oct. 31 Daily Faceoff update, with first power-play unit and first penalty-kill unit time, and his hold on the job depends on how Detroit's center group reshuffles around the injured Kasper and the scratched Larkin.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Detroit page (fetched Nov. 2, last updated Oct. 31, source Ansar Khan) has Finnie centering Alex DeBrincat and Viktor Arvidsson on line 1. It lists him on the first power-play unit with Arvidsson, Raymond, DeBrincat and Seider, and on the first penalty-kill unit with Compher, Chiarot and Seider. Ansar Khan's power-play practice notes, undated in the aggregator, describe him as the bumper on PP1. His ice time in the last five games ran from 15:00 to 21:13 (Hockey-Reference), and he played 20:34 in Edmonton, including 2:38 on the power play and 1:35 shorthanded (Detroit Sports Nation, Oct. 28). Competition for the center work includes Copp (line 2), Compher and Danielson. ESPN's page, 14 days old, listed Kasper and Larkin on injured reserve. Detroit Hockey Now says Larkin is a healthy scratch amid trade talk. The Hockey News says an update from interim GM Shawn Horcoff is forthcoming.
He is producing and being trusted. He has 10 points in 14 games (Hockey Reference and Hockey DB game logs), a first-line and first power-play spot, and 20-plus minutes in two of the last three games. Detroit Sports Nation says he began the year at wing and has shown he can handle offense, defense and tough matchups at center. With Larkin possibly traded and Kasper out, the center job could stay his.
The role may be a product of injuries, and the scoring pace may not last. Detroit Sports Nation notes his early 20.8 percent shooting will be hard to maintain. It also frames the open question as whether he stays in the top six once injured forwards return. Daily Faceoff's line page is a projection that changes with injuries and trades, and Finnie was a 15:30-per-game player as a rookie.
Where analysts split
Whether Finnie stays a top-six center once Kasper returns and the Larkin situation is resolved, or slides back to a wing or third-line role. Detroit Hockey Now's summer preview projected a third-line role for him if the roster stayed the same. Current coverage says he has earned the minutes but has not settled the question of permanence.
