Jack Quinn

Consensus #125 · RW26 · tier 8Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Jack Quinn is a second-line right wing who also holds a first power-play spot, and he has started the season hot, with the open question being who plays on his line.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Sabres page (fetched Nov 2, last updated Oct 31) has him on the second line at right wing, with Josh Doan and Noah Ostlund. It also puts him on the first power-play unit with Zach Benson, Ostlund, Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin. Inside the Rink's Oct 31 preview and Dobber's last-game table show the same line and power-play group. Dobber's table shows that trio at 11:09 of even-strength time against the Kings, second among forward lines behind Thompson's line. Quinn is not on the penalty-kill units on Daily Faceoff's page. Competition for the work comes from Benson, Doan and Konsta Helenius, who have rotated through the top six, and from Jason Zucker on the second power-play unit. I did not find his per-game ice time this season.

The case for

Yahoo's Oct 31 game notes had him at 7 goals and 5 assists in 13 games, with 10 points in his last eight. Last season he scored 8 goals and 6 power-play points in 14 games. Sabrenoise reported the Benson-Ostlund-Quinn line had 115 minutes together through 11 games, far more than any other Buffalo line, and called it the Sabres' highest-ceiling trio after the opener. The first power-play unit gives him a steady source of points.

The case against

The Sabres' lines keep changing. Sabrenoise described the practice lines as a blender about six days ago, and Quinn has played with different wingers over the past two weeks. Last season he played only 14 games, so a full 84-game workload is unproven. His line is a second line behind Thompson's, and his hot start rests on goals and power-play time that depend on the first unit staying as it is.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is about who skates with him. In the Oct 31 lineups (Daily Faceoff, Inside the Rink, Yahoo), Benson moved up beside Thompson and Peyton Krebs, and Doan moved down to Quinn's line. In the earlier practice lines, ESPN's depth chart and the Oct 17 projections, Benson-Ostlund-Quinn was the second line. No outlet I found questions Quinn's own place in the top six or on the first power-play unit.
