Joel Eriksson Ek

Consensus #36 · C15 · tier 7Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Joel Eriksson Ek is the first-line center between Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy and plays on the first power-play unit, and every current source I read agrees on that.

Role

Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched 26 October, updated that day from the 25 October game at Vancouver) has him centering Kaprizov and Boldy on line 1. The same page puts him on the first power-play unit with Shabanov, Kaprizov, Quinn Hughes and Boldy. NHL.com's projected lineup for the 24 October game at Seattle had the same top line, with Coleman, Hartman and Brink on line 2. Dobber's Frozen Pool data for the 18 October Columbus game showed that line with 14:14 of even-strength time and the power-play group with 4:36. I read no overall ice-time figure for this season. His penalty-kill role is unclear: the fetched Daily Faceoff page does not list him on either PK unit, but Inside the Rink's 22 and 25 October previews had him on the second PK unit with Boldy. Goalies are not part of his role. Last season he played 13 GP (10 PTS, 4 PPP, 43 SOG, 18 HIT, 4 BLK); I did not search why the games were so few and do not know.

The case for

He sits on the top line with Kaprizov and Boldy and on the first power-play unit with Hughes, so he has the best linemates and special-teams deployment on the roster. That line controlled play in the 18 October Columbus game, with a 75.0 shot share and 70.6 shot-attempt share per Dobber's Frozen Pool. He also drives play at both ends: a Hockey Wilderness piece (about 318 days old) credited him with a Corsi-for percentage of 54 and strong results against top opposing centers.

The case against

His 13 GP last season is a small sample and a warning about availability, though I did not find the cause. His scoring depends on staying with Kaprizov and Boldy and on the power play, and the Wild's depth centers (Hartman, McCarron, Yurov) give the coach alternatives if the line stops producing. His value is also partly defensive, which does not always show up in counting stats. I found no current writer arguing a specific downside, so this case is inferred from the situation.
