John Tavares
Tavares is a 36-year-old second-line center on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, with no return date reported, so his rest of season depends on how fast he recovers and whether he gets his old spot back.
Role
Before the injury he centered the second line. Beat writer David Alter's warmup lines for Oct. 15 had Tavares between Nick Paul and Kirill Marchenko, with Tavares as the second-line center. Last season he had 4 power-play points in 7 games, and TSN reported Oct. 17 that rookie Gavin McKenna took his spot on the top power-play unit with Darren Raddysh, Auston Matthews and William Nylander. In his absence Nick Paul has centered the second line with Nylander and Easton Cowan or Marchenko, per the lines Alter posted for Oct. 22 and Oct. 30. Colton Sissons and Paul are the center depth he would return to. I did not read a current page showing where he would slot back in or what his ice time would be. Hot Stove's page, when indexed, showed Bo Groulx as a scratch.
He was producing before the injury, with 2 goals and 5 assists in 7 games, and Daily Faceoff's projections have him in the top tier among centers for goals, assists and power-play production. Coach Jim Hiller said on Oct. 17 that "John was playing well." The Oct. 17 reports also said it was week-to-week, with Dreger putting it closer to two to three weeks. If he returns inside that window, he has no real competition for the second-line center job, since Paul is filling in rather than displacing him. The Leafs also lack a playmaking center, a gap writers at Hockey Patrol flagged when he went down.
He is 36 and the injury looked like a knee problem on the ice, though the team has only said lower body. The Leafs said it could last one to six weeks, and Daily Faceoff on Oct. 17 noted that could run to the end of November. Daily Faceoff's Oct. 28 update, from Alter, says he is still week-to-week after two weeks out, with no practice or return report that I could find. Lines have kept moving without him, with McKenna and Cowan in expanded roles, so his power-play spot and line may not return automatically.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that he is out and week-to-week. The open question is the timeline: Dreger said closer to two to three weeks, while the club's own range was one to six. A secondary question is whether he gets the top power-play spot back from McKenna, and I found no reporting on that.
Injury: IR: assessed real
Lower-body injury, IR
Placed on IR with a lower-body injury and an expected return date of 2026-10-31, roughly two weeks away, so he'll miss a meaningful chunk of games in that span.
What would change this: Any update on practice participation or change to the 2026-10-31 target return date
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
