J.T. Miller

Consensus #142 · C49 · tier 10Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

J.T. Miller, a 33-year-old center and the team captain, is a second-line center on the Rangers who also works on the first power-play unit, and his usage has been steady through the first weeks of the season.

Role

Forever Blueshirts' projected lines (updated Nov. 1, from PuckPedia) have him on line 2 at center, between Tye Kartye and Oliver Bjorkstrand. The NHL.com preview for the Nov. 1 game against Edmonton lists the same trio. Zibanejad centers line 1 with Dorofeyev and Lafreniere, and Noah Laba centers line 3. Ship It Nation's page shows Miller on the first power-play unit with Zibanejad, Lafreniere, Dorofeyev and Fox in the Oct. 26 game, and ESPN's line page (indexed 14 days ago) shows the same unit. ESPN also has him on the second penalty-kill unit with Glendening, and Daily Faceoff's indexed page listed him there too, but I could not confirm either as current. His ice time this season is not confirmed for recent games. Frozen Pool's early card showed 17:56 per game with 2:46 on the power play through 7 games, but that snapshot is dated, and I have no current figure. The Morning Puck's Nov. 1 page shows a different arrangement, with Miller between Kartye and Perreault, so it conflicts with the other sources. Daily Faceoff's line page returned no readable content when I fetched it, so I am not citing it for current lines.

The case for

He has held a top-six center job and first-unit power-play time all season, and he plays with Zibanejad and Lafreniere on that unit. Forever Blueshirts has written that his chemistry with Kartye is excellent, and the Miller-Dorofeyev-Bjorkstrand trio was called the team's best line early in the season. Last season was a short, quiet one (15 games, 10 points, 2 power-play points), so an optimist expects a full season in a stable role to be better.

The case against

He is no longer a first-line center, because Zibanejad has the top spot. His second line has been rearranged repeatedly in the opening weeks, and Forever Blueshirts has noted a 'Bjorkstrand conundrum' as the staff tries to fit its wingers. Last season he played only 15 games, so there is little recent evidence he can sustain a full workload. Coach Sullivan has also shown he will swap wingers quickly.

Where analysts split

The disagreement I found is over his wingers rather than his own job. One question is whether Bjorkstrand returns to Miller's line, which Forever Blueshirts says would likely break up the Kartye chemistry. Another is whether Sullivan reshuffles again, as he did when Kartye and Bjorkstrand swapped places early in the season. I found no analyst arguing that Miller loses his center spot or his power-play spot.
