Kevin Rooney
Rooney is not part of Utah's NHL group as far as I can find, so he has no reliable fantasy role for now.
Role
The Daily Faceoff Utah line page (fetched Oct 10 update) lists no Rooney among its 12 forwards. The fourth line there is McBain, Stenlund and But. Active players are 23 of 23, so there is no open spot visible. The Hockey Writers (about 25 days ago) said he signed a one-year AHL deal with Tucson for this season. I did not find a current transaction confirming whether he is in Tucson or with the Mammoth today. Last season he played one NHL game, with 10 minutes of ice time. Per The Hockey Writers, he otherwise bounced between Tucson and the Utah press box. If he returns, his expected job is a depth center or fourth-line penalty killer. Kevin Stenlund and Barrett Hayton are the centers ahead of him, per the line pages. Michael Carcone, Daniil But and Kailer Yamamoto rotate on the fourth-line wing.
He is a veteran penalty killer and faceoff man. The Yahoo and club releases from last October said he averaged 1:53 of shorthanded time per game with Calgary and has 330 career NHL games. A call-up is possible if injuries hit the forward group. Last season he scored in his one Utah game.
He signed an AHL contract rather than an NHL deal. He was recalled several times last season but sat out most of those stints, and he played just one game. He is absent from the current Mammoth line pages. Utah's fourth-line and penalty-kill spots are filled by Stenlund, Hayton and McBain. At best he is an injury-replacement name with little scoring upside.
