Kirill Marchenko

Consensus #41 · RW9 · tier 5Week 5: 3 gamesIRUpdated Nov 2

Marchenko is an injured-reserve winger with no confirmed return date. Before the injury he was producing at about a point per game for Toronto, so his role should be waiting for him when he is healthy.

Role

He is out now. He left the Oct. 26 game against Calgary and was placed on IR on Thursday, per ESPN's report of David Alter at The Hockey News. Before the injury he started on the top line with Matthews, then moved to John Tavares's wing, where he scored a power-play goal against Buffalo (TSN, 16 days old). In his absence, Daily Faceoff's player page says Gavin McKenna moved up to the top line. Brandon Duhaime, Teddy Blueger and Zack MacEwen could form the de facto third line (The Hockey Writers). I could not load Daily Faceoff's line page, so I cannot say what his current line or power-play unit is. His last-season line shows 8 power-play points in 14 games and 247 minutes of ice time, which suggests regular power-play work. Reporting I found does not give his current minutes or unit.

The case for

Optimists point to the production: 6 goals and 8 assists in his first 14 games with Toronto, a point per game, plus his chemistry with Tavares and the power-play goal against Buffalo. Toronto is thin in the top six because of other injuries, so his spot should be there when he returns. One report suggests a short absence, an unconfirmed MCL sprain of roughly three weeks (Howard Berger, via Yahoo).

The case against

Skeptics point to the uncertainty. The team has not confirmed a diagnosis or timeline, and Yahoo noted that Toronto has given no diagnosis beyond lower body. The MCL report is unverified. Even a three-week estimate puts him on IR for several more games. He also struggled to click with Matthews early, and Tavares, his productive linemate, was injured too (TSN), so his line may differ when he returns. With Toronto missing several established forwards, the lineup around him is unsettled.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is over the length of the absence: the unconfirmed roughly three-week MCL estimate versus the team's vague week-to-week label and IR placement. His role on return is also unsettled, because Matthews's line has changed, McKenna was promoted in his place, and Tavares was hurt too.

Injury: IR: assessed real

Lower-body injury, IR

Placed on IR with a lower-body injury and an expected return of Nov. 7, which is roughly a week and a half out, so he should be treated as out for this stretch of games.

What would change this: Return to practice or official activation around the Nov. 7 target date.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
