Leo Carlsson

Consensus #57 · C19 · tier 9Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Carlsson is the top-line center on a Ducks team that is scoring heavily, and he is on the first power-play unit, which is where most of his production comes from. This is based on lines projected for Nov. 1 and practice lines from Oct. 28. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff's own line page.

Role

Projected lines for Nov. 1 vs. Ottawa (Inside the Rink, posted Nov. 1) have him centering line 1 between Alex Killorn and Judd Caulfield. Derek Lee's practice lines for Oct. 28, relayed by GameDayLines, show the same trio. He is on PP1 with Sennecke, Granlund, LaCombe and Gauthier (Inside the Rink Nov. 1, 5v5 Hockey Oct. 29). Inside the Rink also lists him on the second penalty-kill unit. Mikael Granlund centers line 2 with Gauthier and Sennecke. I found no source giving his current ice time. A FantasyData note on the season-opening win credits him with 17:43, including 2:58 on the power play, but that is one game.

The case for

He holds the 1C job and the first power-play unit, and his production is mostly playmaking. Per Fox Sports he has 4 goals, 17 assists and 14 power-play points through 14 games. That matches the line we hold for him, so those figures appear to be this season's. Fox calls him a steady producer with significant top-line and top-unit minutes. FantasyData also logged a three-assist power-play game against Florida.

The case against

The production leans on the power play. Fox notes his last seven points at one stretch all came there, and any change to PP1 would hurt him. His minus-5 rating suggests the top line has not been dominant at even strength. Heavy.com's Nov. 1 preview has Sennecke shooting 25.8 percent with 8 goals, which suggests some of the team's scoring may not last. His wingers keep changing. The Oct. 27 lines had Gauthier and Caulfield with him, and a Vancouver game-log snippet showed a poor shot-attempt share (5 for, 12 against) for that trio. The coaches have since moved to Killorn and Caulfield. He also has only 23 shots on goal, so his goal total depends on a modest shot volume.

Where analysts split

This is not an argument among analysts. It is an open question in the lines themselves: who plays left wing with Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier or Alex Killorn. Gauthier was on his line in the Oct. 26 practice and the Oct. 27 game. Killorn replaced him in the Oct. 28 practice and the Nov. 1 projection. A second question is whether he stays on PP1. ESPN lists him there, and Inside the Rink and 5v5 Hockey show him on PP1 in the middle of the first unit. FantasyData's page also shows a PP4 slot beside Sam Colangelo, so I could not reconcile its power-play labels.
